Bittersweets: No more bake sales as schools become cupcake-free zones

The New York Times reported this weekend that New York schools have become no cupcake zones. Taking aim at skyrocketing obesity in children, the city’s Education Department has banned the use of bake sales as fund-raisers for teams and clubs. (An exception is made in the new wellness policy for parent groups and PTAs. They can sell treats once a month.)

The Times reports that about 40 percent of the city’s elementary and middle school students are overweight or obese.

“We have an undeniable problem in the city, state and the country with obesity,” Eric Goldstein, the chief of the office of school support services, told the Times. “During the school day, we have to focus on what is healthy for the mind and the body.”
