Atlanta Public Schools PreKindergarten Program
PreK Registration Helpline

The Pre-Kindergarten Program serves approximately 800 four-year-olds in 30 sites throughout the city of Atlanta.  The program helps young children become independent, self-confident and enthusiastic learners.  PreK prepares children for success in kindergarten.

While the district wishes it could serve all four-year-olds, only 40 classrooms serving 20 students each are available. The program is 100 percent state funded. There are always more children seeking spaces in PreK than there are seats available, and for that reason the school system will use a lottery process as the fairest method of filling classes.

PreK Registration for the 2009-10 school year will be held on two Saturdays in April at the following times and locations:

9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Inman Middle School and the New Schools at Carver High School

9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Douglass High School and Maynard Jackson High School

The Lottery Drawing will be held Monday, April 27 and parents/guardians will be notified by mail beginning May 1 explaining whether their child has a permanent placement or has been placed on the waiting list. Lottery results also will be posted at the PreK sites.  No registration forms will be accepted before 9:00 am or after 7:00 pm on April 18, 2009 and April 25, 2009. All children not selected for a PreK classroom in the April 27th, 2009, lottery drawing will be placed on the PreK waiting list until space becomes available.

The drawing will be managed by an outside firm, and a certified public accounting firm will validate the drawing proceedings and results.

PreK Eligibility

A child must be four years of age on or before September 1, 2009. A child is eligible to attend PreK for only one year and must live in an Atlanta Public Schools’ attendance zone or be a child of an Atlanta Public Schools’ employee. Children will not be denied participation in the program on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex or disability.

The PreK registration form for the 2009-2010 school year can only be completed by a child’s parent or guardian. The registration form will be available at each registration site. The parent/guardian will indicate on the registration form their first choice, second choice and third choice for enrollment into a PreK classroom. They will also indicate if they only want their first choice to be considered for enrollment into a PreK classroom. An APS employee is eligible to complete two PreK registration forms, even if they do not live in an APS attendance zone.  The APS badge is required to verify employment with APS.

  • APS will not accept a driver’s license, voter registration card, Medicaid card, or any type of telephone bill as proof of residency.
  • If the parent/guardian does not have a utility bill, apartment lease or house contract in their name, an Affidavit of Residency must be completed. An Affidavit of Residency will be available at each Pre-K registration site.
  • Parents who are legal guardians must bring a certified copy of the court order granting guardianship for the PreK child.  Persons in control or in charge of a PreK child who do not have legal guardianship may conditionally enroll the child with the submission of the Non-Parental Enrollment Affidavit.  A parent or legal guardian shall return to the school within 30 calendar days to complete the enrollment process or the PreK child may not be allowed to enroll in a PreK class. A Non-Parental Enrollment Affidavit will be available at each PreK registration site.

  • Child’s Social Security number/card is also requested.  Providing the child’s Social Security Number is voluntary. Parents/guardians who choose not to provide their child’s Social Security Number or card will be asked to complete a waiver, which will be available at each registration site.
